From the AJC ( of all places!! ) :
No longer will Georgia-grown trees vie for the chance to be the Macy’s Great Tree.
This year’s tree wasn’t grown at all. Beginning this year, an artificial tree will be used as the iconic start to the holiday season in Atlanta, the retailer announced Tuesday. No falling pine needles from the new 56-foot-tall tree. “For more than six decades, generations of families have shared in the beloved tradition of the Great Tree Lighting on Thanksgiving night,” Michael Krauter, Macy’s president and regional director of stores, said in an emailed statement.
“The holidays are a special time for families and it is a privilege to contribute to the magic of the season. This year, Macy’s is excited to bring a new element to this annual holiday festivity as we celebrate with a reusable tree. Macy’s made the decision to adopt for our display a locally made tree that can return year-after-year.”
The new tree, made by the Atlanta-based Christmas Lights, Etc., will have a new location and no longer will stand on top of the store at Lenox, Macy’s said. This year, the tree will be located in the Macy’s parking lot. ( the rest )
