Capital F Fashion

This is not for the namby pamby weak of heart. Readers - if you don't understand why the Queen- of -all -that -is got the gay gasp heard round the world last night, in some dress that you did not even understand, then this is not the post for you. ( or read on and I will educate you! ) Also, I am not sure how you all read this little art project, if it is on a phone or something small, there are going to be A LOT of photos in this, so if you have limited band width or some such nonsense, just wait till you are on a real computer - plus, you do not need to be viewing art like this on a tiny screen, now enjoy)

The Spring 2012 exhibition organized by
THE COSTUME INSTITUTE OF THE METROPOLITAN MUSEM OF ART
is
Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada's Impossible Conversations
"The spring 2012 exhibition organized by The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art is Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations. The exhibition, on view from May 10 through August 19, 2012 (preceded on May 7 by The Costume Institute Gala Benefit), explores the striking affinities between these two Italian designers from different eras. Inspired by Miguel Covarrubias’s satirical “Impossible Interviews” for Vanity Fair in the 1930s, curators Harold Koda and Andrew Bolton orchestrate conversations between these iconic women to suggest new readings of the designers’ most innovative work.“Given the role Surrealism and other art movements play in the designs of both Schiaparelli and Prada, it seems only fitting that their inventive creations be explored here at the Met,” said Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. “Schiaparelli’s collaborations with Dalí and Cocteau as well as Prada’s Fondazione Prada push art and fashion ever closer, in a direct, synergistic, and culturally redefining relationship.”
Here is a link to the actual exhibit
HERE is a link to EVERY DRESS OF THE NIGHT, or a great many of them
dig in , there is a whole lot of pretty that I did not get too on here.
Let's just jump right in:

THE PERFECT
This is one of the most famous dresses in fashion history:
The 1937 Lobster Dress designed by Elsa Schiaparelli was a simple white silk evening dress with a crimson waistband featuring a large lobster painted by Dali onto the skirt. It was most famously worn by Wallis Simpson in a series of photographs by Cecil Beaton taken at the Château de Candé shortly before her marriage to Edward VIII.

The Future Duchess of Windsor here, still Wallis Simpson
and last night

Vogue Editor-in-chief and host of the Gala,
Anna Wintour in a Schiaparelli inspired Prada, Manolo Blahnik kitten heels, her own necklace and fur cape. Daughter Bee Shaffer in Erdem, Fall 2012
THE GOOD
This took some work,
there was A LOT of good last night

Christina Ricci in Thakoon - with the designer in the middle The green is a most predictable Dianna Agron in a lovely but pat Carolina Herrera toga, pic is only to see the back of Christina's dress. I love this, Tlo hates it.

Florence Welch in ALexander McQueen .

VERY her, very McQueen, very perfect for the event.

The back in a photo with Cate Blanchett in McQueen as well

with the head of the house now, Sarah Burton
( of DoC's wedding dress fame )

Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen.
PERFECT.
Hillary Swank in Michael Kors with the Duchess himself on her arm,
nice work if you can get it. ANd beautiful dress , great color on her - not loving the almost side pony, but they were everywhere .

Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney
I NEVER like her on a red carpet, but this is pure movie star,
love the fit, looks like its made of Mecrury.

Elizabeth Banks in Mary Katrantzou.
This designer is hotter than hot right now, and this is the only place on the planet you could wear this dress. Again, Fashion with a capital F. Who cars about wearable....

Ivanka Trump in Peter Pilotto.
Pains me to praise a Trump, but she has been killing RC's lately. Perfect for the event.

Dakota Fanning in Louis Vuitton

Come on,it a freaking Princess gown, two years she will be too old for it, tonight, it is lovely.
.
Rooney Mara in Givenchy
This is granny panty with lace over skirt done correctly, with great styling. Over this whole look, but she is wearing it very well.

Chloe Sevigny in Miu Miu

FASHION PEOPLE - and short done right, perfect for her at this event

Scarlett Johansson in Dolce and Gabbana
LOTS of haters out there about this dress, and I love it. I think its old school Hollywood glamor, and fits perfectly, yes, she has hair issues, but she always does. A++
Kristen Dunst in Rodarte and Van Cleef & Arpels.
I just like it because it is so very different, rocking the 30's vibe, and she looks so tall. Stands out!

Rihanna in Tom Ford.
I think this is such a home run, come on croc embossed Tom Ford black leather gown at the Met Gala ? What is not to love....

Kate Upton in Michael Kors.
This made the cut where like 5 did not, and I kept going back to it.
Very on trend, but here mostly for the fit and styling.

Emma Stone in Lanvin
Again, short done right - a very kicky party dress. Why not ?

 ROYALTY
Good Queens
  • DVF : Perfect dress for the night, a little whimsy/surrealism. Hey, you have a zillionair gay husband and know you own any rc you step on . We love her
  • Donatella  : say what you will about the face and hair, it is a beautiful beautiful dress that fits like a second skin on a ROCKING body - bow down

 Bad Queens
  • Donna Karen : Beautiful dress and wrap, love everything, but come on. I believe a few seamstresses work for you, get a dress that fits
  • Vera Wang: lovely dress, eat a sandwich.

THE BAD

At full risk of getting points on my card:

Sarah Jessica Parker in Valentino
Seen here with Mr Valentino and his partner Giancarlo Giammetti -
I tried. I looked through many back Valentino collections and could not find this.
I just don't get it, and maybe in real life, not photographs, but its just coming across as Aunt Ella in Oklahoma. I am now frighted that I put this in print.

Post baby Blue Beyonce in a serious Givenchy Couture gown,
God... I am going to fashion hell, but it is just too much.
Yes, you have a rocking body - but this is too Vegas, and at this point has been done to death.

Amber Heard and Zac Posen both in (surprise ) Zac Posen.
This is me - Im sure some folks will put this on their best, but I just do not like any of his work. It all seems so over worked. The Anti Chanel - get ready for a party and take one thing off, he finished a dress and adds three more details.
Plus it looks too much like what Charlize Theron wore to the 2010 Oscars, and we gays are like elephants when it comes to this stuff.

James Murphy and Christina Topsøe
I believe these are musicians who stopped by the Gala on the way to their
Uncle Sippy's funeral. Sad and wrong.

 Greta Gerwig in Prabal Gurung.
Just ugly, color, fabric, posture, forgettable.
Carey Mulligan in Prada.
A host of the Gala, wearing the honoree of the Gala, and I hate it.
Looks like what the mother of the groom would wear to a Little Mermaid themed wedding.
I do like the fit of it... maybe smaller of larger paillettes? something is just off. Who am I to question Miuccia Prada?
well, no one - but it's my blog.

 Heidi Klum in Escada.
Nothing horrible about this, hair is a bit full  - it's just tired and " normal" on a night when over the top is not over the top enough.
Janelle Monae in who? Jaclyn Smith for K-mart.
Can't find who made this abomination, maybe she " ran it up herself"
I love her voice - the only reason I can think off that Anna did not have her sent home was she was working the after party ( and its not just pants/jumpsuits, there were some done right. )

 Kristen Wiig in Stella McCartney.
You look foolish, The Met Gala is not a place to wear what June Cleaver would have worn for her weekly grocery shopping. NOT a bad dress, just full out wrong for the event. Fail - she should be forced to pay some charity a shit load of money for doing this to us.
Mary-Kate Olsen in the Row
This is her own design from her own company.
This woman - girl - is TWENTY SIX years old, and a billionaire,
rag out the sleeves and its Miss Havisham, fashion does not forgive ugly
don't get me started on the hair. ( and look how crappy Kristin Wiig looks! )

THE SURPRISES

  Coco Rocha in vintage Givnechy
once owned and worn by Elizabeth Taylor
Not 100% sure it is correct for the event, but it has a kick ass providence!
and you know she was the most comfortable girl there!

Mr. and Mrs. Marc Mezvinsky ( nee Chelsea Clinton ) wearing , I do not know, but looking lovely on a rarely seen RC. A lovely young couple , lets hope to see more ; but your mother and I have been talking GET PREGNANT ALL READY! Your father is not getting any younger, but you do both look fantastic. He is just adorable.

and to wrap us all up
oddly enough, brand new New Yorker
Tim Tebow in Ralph Lauren.
Really.
