O Addison! my Addison! our fearful trip is done .....

( I have no idea what is up with the fonts in this post , when I am copy and pasting things this computer / or maybe its blogger just goes bananas - so sorry )

THE 2014 TONY AWARDS!

The gay what ? If the Oscars are the gay Superbowl - then the Tonys .... would be the gay Tonys. Really, more man on man kissing than in 10 Joe Gage films. Last night was a real toss up for the fly over gays, the MISS USA pageant , hosted by lead gay about town, the overly pretty , msnbc's Thomas Roberts , for the sporty gays out there there was a basketball AND a hockey play off game last night - and for the Comicon gays, it was a GoT night -leaving the little Antoinette Perry's out there on their own!

How to get folks to turn in ? The NYT said it best this morning, " MAKE THEM THINK IT'S THE MOVIES!  " “You’re asking people to care about something that may not affect their lives, may not even affect their children’s lives,” Anderson Cooper said, introducing the CBS broadcast of the Tony Awards on Sunday night.
Oh, wait; sorry. That was actually from the tail end of a “60 Minutes” segment just before the Tonys about whether we should do something to intercept asteroids that might someday crash into Earth. But really, it sums up what has always been the issue for the Tony show. Lots and lots of Americans have never seen a musical or a play on Broadway. How to make them care?
On Sunday, as often in recent years, the answer seemed to be, make them think they’re at the movies. There was Clint Eastwood, presenting the directing awards (rather awkwardly). There was a familiar number from “Aladdin,” with other songs from Disney’s greatest hits sampled, too. There was Rocky, slugging it out in the ring. And, of course, there was the Wolverine, Hugh Jackman, serving again as host. " ( the rest from the Times )

Now except for the dig at Hugh Jackman, who mid way through the show, I confessed to Neil " he is my favorite living human " - having never looked better, and is funny and sweet and kind and self deprecating... on and on, I totally agree with all of this. Why did we need your Clint Eastwoods and your OSCAR WINNER Jennifer Hudson ?

We are light years away from the world of the Cub Room and Addison DeWitt, I know. Some real Broadway gays tried to explain the realities of the Tonys and voting a couple of weeks ago, but being a fly over gay myself, I did not understand ( or really listen all that closely). It is just for me Sutton Foster and Cherry Jones ARE big enough stars .

All that said, as we always do, We really enjoyed most all of last nights show.  Idina's song from IF/THEN was almost as wonderful as it was live and in person, and BIG WINNER  A Gentleman's Guide looked most fun .It is just that the other award shows don't have to pretend to be something they are not.
