States Rights, Calvinism and Meredith Vieira

When it rains it pours. Let's dig right in.

THE BIG ONE
( and , it could just be THE big one. )

From the NYT : " BOSTON — A federal judge in Massachusetts on Thursday found that a law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, ruling that gay and lesbian couples deserve the same federal benefits as heterosexual couples.
Judge Joseph L. Tauro of United States District Court in Boston sided with the plaintiffs in two separate cases brought by the state attorney general and a gay rights group.
Although legal experts disagreed over how the rulings would fare on appeal, the judge’s decisions were nonetheless sure to further inflame the nationwide debate over same-sex marriage and gay rights." (the rest)

HOLY LET FREEDOM RING BATMAN! A Nixon appointed Federal judge rules The Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional. This was out of the blue, at least for me. The entire focus has been out in California and Perry v Schwarzenegger. [ WHICH rumours were flying all afternoon and evening long that Judge Vaughn Walker would rule TODAY, but now the rumor mill is saying Tuesday. ]
Wait, he ruled it on a STATES RIGHTS... hoist that up your petard Mr and Mrs small gov't, states rights tea baggers. This is one of those I can not wrap my head around it moments. DOMA - the bane of so so many peoples lives , struck down. Here is the interesting part , well ONE of the many. The Obama DOJ will have to appeal this case, it is their job.
The President has many times said he does not agree with DOMA, and yet, his government will be forced to defend it, in the Federal Court of Appeals and in the Supreme Court.. you know, if it goes that far. It's all Greek to me, legalese and everyone on the planet has an opinion. But, today, tonight and tomorrow... DOMA is unconstitutional.
WOW.
It is too early for reaction. Everything is two steps forward , one step back. Same sex couples
are equal in California, then they are not. The stupid Governor of Hawaii takes away any sort
of legal protection for us , on and on. " How is it we lose all the battles and yet, are winning the
war ? I will right more about this, when I learn more, right now, it is all just sort of sinking in.
No one really knows where this will lead.

P.C.U.S.A.

From the AP: " Presbyterian leaders voted Thursday to allow non-celibate gays in committed relationships to serve as clergy, approving the first of two policy changes that could make their church one of the most gay-friendly major Christian denominations in the U.S." ( the rest )
COME ON! This is main street, main line, main stream... this is Winder and Mendon and the whole country... "We're here, we're queer... and yawn... we have made out way down to the Presbyterians!
Man, Maggie Galligher is having a bad , bad, bad day.

The Today Show

Last, and well, least.
There is this Wedding contest thing on the Today Show. I watch Morning Joe. But, NBC had ruled that it was for breeders only and the morning tv gays were all pissing and moaning. I am all about choosing my battles...and might not have gone with this one. Some did not agree, and were all up in the grills of the posers that be at 30 Rock. Enter the GaGa and the fear of the GaGa and the peacock folks caved to the gays and now anyone at all can put themselves out there for faux fame and stuff.
ON FACE VALUE! this is a small tiny little thing. But, Neil is out there day and night saying that " being honest and talking, talking, talking , letting them see us, telling our stories .. etc. is the way to go." SO.... the zillions that start their day with the TODAY show, could see two happy men or two happy women, doing their wedding thing. Now everyone can see a same sex couple. ( like we are not on tv all the time anyway...)

Brown v Board in 1954, was ahead of its time. Loving v Virginia (1967), today seems horribly antiquated, but was right on the edge of its time. Hardwick v Bowers ( 1986) seems , even from just 2010 to be so, old fashion. I really think that the country have moved so beyond the issue of Marriage Equality. People don't care. They are concerned with their parents health, their kids education, food on the table and the damn oil spill. This battle is done. Yes , there are these hold outs , The Texas GOP, NOM, but they are like little cartoon Japanese soldiers stuck on those South Sea Islands years and years after the war was over. Come towards the light , people. It is time to move on.
