Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) will not seek re-election in 2012, Roll Call and WLOS-TV report.
Shuler is a Blue Dog Democrat that represents a conservative North Carolina district that became more Republican under the state's redistricting, losing most of the Democratic bastion of Asheville.
Shuler, a former NFL quarterback, won election in 2006 as part of a Democratic wave.

Let's hear it for MORE polarization, and the end of the blue dogs.
