" Is this Heaven? "
" No, it's Iowa."
Iowa is awash in the pink dollar.
On April 3, 2009, Iowa, little Heartlandish, corn filled, red, white and blue Iowa got the gay marriage. Full blown, " I-now-pronounce-you-husband-and-husband gay marriage". It had been in the works for a while, fighting off all kinds of this and that court cases from the haters out there in the fly over. Instead of brimstone and all of that , what has happened is a real influx of money, in these rather hard economic times. Turns out that gay and lesbian couples from all over the mid-west are flocking to Iowa and having expensive weddings. Lots of studies have been done , because this isn't Boston or New England, turns out marriage equality is GOOD for a state's bottom line.
But, you know, that is not good enough for some folks, oh no, the double secret probation crowd is all up in arms, going to save Iowa from the horror that is equality and an influx of much needed dollars. The Iowa Family Policy Council, the clearing house for hate there in the Hawkeye State, was going to " draw a line in the sand". House race 66 was going to be the hill on which they were planting their flag. Searching high and low for the most Christian, most " pro family " candidate out there , they found Clair Rudison , Jr.
From The Iowa Independent " Clair Rudison Jr., an ordained minister that works with the Iowa Missionary and Educational Baptist State Convention. He is a former Texas resident who is married with 10 children. Rudison describes himself as pro-family, pro-life and pro-marriage." The Independent went on to call the race for the 66th "ground zero for gay marriage fight". Even the mac daddy of all "Christian love haters" Tony Perkins, got involved in this one. HERE is a little video from Mr. Perkins, watch and be very afraid, indeed.
The battle lines were drawn, " We are taking Iowa back!". The 66th district is one of the most heavily Democratic in the entire state of Iowa, and the Democratic Primary ,like the Georgia of my youth, IS the election. On one hand we have the incumbent, fully supportive of Marriage Equality, and on the other, on God's side, we have Rev. Rudison. This is Iowa, and the righteous will be heard. Come on the heart of the heart land, and the people had this whole gay marriage thing " crammed down their throats",by the activist judges and all. The out come could hardly be any more obvious. Last night was the vote.
The incumbent, Mr. Ako Abdul-Samad, a fully inclusive, pro marriage equality, devout Muslim American, kept his seat. The final vote was 75% for Rep. Abdul-Samad, 25% for Mr. Rudison.
Thanks, as always to Joe Jervis " Joe.My.God." for following this story.
