Putting the HO.... in Ho, Ho, Ho....

The last one to the shower is a rotten fruit cake... full Silkwood, please.

Christmas comes but once a year, and thank goodness for that, I do not think my delicate psyche could take another one. Last nights MAD MEN, was .... dark. Just took us all sorts of places we did not want to go... I would have been so much happier spending the hour with the over the top MOD decorator that Jane hired to do Roger's office, maybe next week. Where to start.....

I'll Have a Blue Christmas Without You

This is the first real Christmas for the one time Draper family, since the d-i-v-o-r-c-e went through. Last Christmas, as far as we know, Betty and Baby Gene were IN Reno getting unhitched. And as all good gay devotees of THE WOMEN know , once you are there you have to stay for the whole six weeks..... ( yippie ki ya yeah! ). Not a clue what the older children did , last time we saw them they were just on the sofa with Carla.
So, this year, we have domestic bliss up in Ossining , with the new Francis family out buying the Christmas tree, and what in Manhattan ? Don's daily drunken debauchery ? The across the hall neighbor says he comes home like that every night. Yeah, they drink like fish there on Madison Ave, but up until now, Don has always been in control .. I mean, he couldn't have kept all those balls in the air, plastered. Jose Cuervo, or what looks like Canadian Club, is not his friend. Was all the talk of AA some sort of foreshadowing ? I kind of hope not...

At 11:02 last night, I was thinking that this was a very weak episode , and that Matthew Weiner had sort of dropped the ball, but then things started sort of sinking in, A LOT happened over the what? A week or so there before Christmas, and I am really loving the fact that all these characters have outside lives , that are not focused on, but that you know are going on ... Sex, drinking, power ( humiliation) , sex, lies, fear, embarrassment, and Joan leading the conga line, ( ala Susan Lovell Nov 3 1992! )

Is Lee Garner, Jr. the devil ? I mean, he runs, owns, works for Lucky Strike, a little unfiltered cancer on a stick from the glory days of television. He made that gross pass at poor Sal, getting him fired and he sadistically tortured all of SCDP last night. Rodger did not want to wear the suit, and the boys did not want to sit in his lap... with sticky Polaroids of shame for years to come. A pure evil to counterbalance Don's personal demons? Or just a little green guy up on the mountain hating all the Whos that work at SCDP ? Not really sure, but with out him we would not have had the fun party.
Then there is über creepy, shadow dwelling young Glen Bishop... pulling the wings off of flies, until he grows up to work for Altria . What was that all about ? As Sally becomes a very pretty young lady, her mothers ex stalker comes out of the woodwork... all is not well in LBJ America, or the Francis's kitchen. ( and Damn! but our brief second with Betty was stunning how much of a perfect Stepford GOP wife she has become so fast.. albeit it ROCKEFELLER Republican..LOVED the coat! )

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind ?

Santa brought Don a lovely Lionel train set for Christmas , and we all get to watch it wreck! You all sat on your sofas last night .. going , don't do it, don't do it... DON'T DO IT! and damn, but the little train jumped the track. Part of me wants to say, "Poor Don, bless his heart", but even me, the BIGGEST of Draper apologists, has a hard time working through his one. You know, NOT that the lovely deer in headlights Allison is with out fault.. she could have walked out... but, she sees the life that Jane has, and you KNOW part of her was going there. Just a mess, just a mess, just a mess.. and then with the 100 dollars. Get up , get your money and go home.... Ho, ho ho....and take a letter, and do my shopping, and be the work wife, Have yourself a merry little Christmas....

Our Miss Peggy had a little forgetting to do as well, love on the rocks or once again, close your eyes and think of England.. or the Saints or where ever good Catholic girls go. Do you feel different ? I think she just felt ... sad. AND .. look, she is SORT OF starting down that Don Draper highway.. NOT cheating on a beau, but SO , not being honest. Not that a girl could in 1964, I guess... but still.

Just not the merriest of Christmases for anyone... God Bless us all.. everyone, and can 1965 get here fast enough ?
