On March 7, 1965, as the leader of Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee ( SNCC ) John Lewis was beaten to a bloody pulp... because he was a black man who wanted to walk across a bridge in Alabama. He still bears the scars.
Today, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian medal that our country has, from President Barack Obama. ( full story here )
