art + beat

Summer is just around the corner, and the billionaires/millionaires while making their plans for the season remembered there is that pesky recession going on! " Drats! no yacht this year! " but, then they thought of that art hanging in that fourth spare bedroom in the townhouse and all was better. Spring time is auction time! We hit the low last week, now for two of the k+b's ABSOLUTE favorites.

"Third Eye," a late work from Jean-Michel Basquiat & Andy Warhol, more than doubled its upper estimate and sold for $7,026,500 at Phillips de Pury & Company on Thursday.

Wayne Thiebaud's "Pies" outsold its estimate Tuesday at Sotheby's single-owner sale from the collection of Alan Stone, performing relatively better than the night's Abstract Expressionist offerings and leaving the auction block at $4 million.

(hat tip huff po )
