In a somewhat uncharacteristic display of anger at a Democratic politician, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann declared that Obama was “god damned wrong” for refusing to do away with the Pentagon’s policy of expelling gay servicemembers.
Mr. Mixner, someone I have been reading for years, ups the ante. The power of words. The power of that word, "Apartheid" will have on an 1980's raised African American couple in the White House. Do you think for one minute that the First Lady, as Miss Robinson, in her best Sondra Huxtable serious girl wear, was not out in the streets of Princeton all up in everyone face about DIVESTITURE and USA OUT of South Africa? If you are our age... and yes, I am the same age as the President and First Lady, that MTV lead, " we need something to be angry about" outrage over South African Apartheid runs deep. Cause Celeb for the post punk set. AND "WE" WON......
Mr. Mixner brings it home:
I would love to have someone ask the President or First Lady if indeed they think that DOMA and DADT and the ban on HIV travelers is indeed Apartheid. People tend to lay claim to words and get a little pissy when they are usurped, but the truth is the truth, and Mr.Obama is a BIG supporter of separate but equal. The irony is not lost on anyone.
Keith is a different story. Mr. Mixner is a big ole homo from way back... I am going for more than one tutu in that closet, NOT that there is ANYTHING wrong with that. But Keith is a straight mans , straight man, all baseball carded and Fox Sports. RBI's and his young hot Weather Girl girl friend. And he is the future, our future. This is far from the first time that he has come , on tv, to the defense of Gay and Lesbian Americans. Last nights interview with Dan Savage HERE.
I have been saying for the longest time, " we can not do this on our own". GLBT Americans are just too small (and a way too hated by some) of a minority to make that much of a difference. Sure in some big cities we are a good chunk of the population, but Nation Wide, not so much. We are going to need open minded, freedom loving ( power of words..) fellow Americans who are not gay, to help us . The white Catholic church in the African American civil rights movement ( and the Northern GOP , at the time... shocking!) for example. We will need guys like Keith to change the " hearts and minds" of his fellow big haired straight boys.....
So, big thank you's to both Messrs Mixner and Olbermann for using their gifts of words, even if just in anger to help me.. to help us.. to help America towards that " more perfect union.
An update, even before I publish: The outrage rains down from the left of the left, as you knew it would. One Commenter on JMG is outraged that Mixner would use this word. " how good gay Americans have in compared to blah blah blah"... as if degrees of injustice matter...
