The Sydney Morning Herald

Michelle and her Sisters.

The First Lady of the land was on hand to present her inaugural ball dress to the permanent collection at the Smithsonian. Accompanied by the dress designer, Jason Wu, and her mother , the always fabulous Mrs. Marian Robinson, the First Lady look fantastic and Springy in Prabal Gurung , Spring 2010.

Ahhhh, the First Lady exhibit at the Smithsonian. That one happy anthrax weekend that I was all alone for hours and hours roaming the halls with couture, and sterling silver. It really is a lovely behind the scenes look into the White House, and not just all dresses. I did not realize that only the last 11 First Ladies had donated their inaugural gowns, the others , are just dresses that the then First Ladies wore. Just like with Armor at the Met, it is amazing how tiny people used to be! Also, sadly, only first inaugural gowns are permitted, odd I think.

On a more serious note, do any of you think that Mrs. Robinson could have , in her wildest dreams, as a child thought of this even happening? Or for that matter out and proud Jason Wu standing along side the First Lady of the United States of America having his work on display for ever? Sometimes are are so intent on the work, all heads down and woe is me, that we just forget how far and how fast we have come... pat on the back to the general "WE".

As for the dress..... well, it is what it is, and a very much a precursor of things to come with the Divine Mrs O. With an all black or all white dress photographs can not do all they should , so big ole benefit of the doubt to Jason and Michelle, and a trip to DC soon to find out for myself.

  • LINK to the Smithsonian First Lady exhibit. ( Where Jackie is still divinely in first place and sadly our very own Rosalynn is still , horribly, in last...)
