FASHION : not for the timid

The 2011 Golden Globes
( the gay play-offs )

Let's just jump right in.

Anne Hathaway in Armani Privé Fall 2011

  • It has been a LONG time since there was SUCH a clear winner on any red carpet. Miss Anne knew that the spot light was going to be on great- with- child and front runner ,The Black Swan herself; Natalie Portman, and she was going to have NO part of it. This dress would steal ANY spot light, she looks amazing, 100% Movie Star!

Tilda Swinton in Jil Sander Spring 2011

  • rant, rave, wail and moan all you want, I love it, but as a rule, Ms. Swinton can do NO WRONG on a red carpet. I loved this entire collection ( SEEN HERE ). A couple of rows down I am going to admonish blonds for wearing washed out colors, this gets a pass, fashion forward, cool, hip.. and if the shoes are pink, which they do look, its over the moon

Nicole Kidman in Prada
  • but Kyle, she ALWAYS looks just like this! Yes, and you do not mess with perfection. Come on, everything about this is cool, chic, pretty.... when you are a Hollywood goddess, you get to dress the part.
 Honorable Mentions

Heidi Klum in Marc Jacobs Spring 2011
  • not crazy about the dress, and not digging the hair, but points here just for shaking things up in a good way.... red carpets are so so so cookie cutter these days that good for our Miss Seal for going out on a limb.

Natalie Portman in Viktor & Rolf
  • This will be the dress that the rubber will hit the road with, meaning no one will be neutral about this dress, it took me a while, but I love it, and that has A LOT to do with the fact that I LOVE Viktor and Rolf. Come on, they take chain saws to mountains of tulle, stuff like that. Not a complex dress or anything, really not what they are known for, but the color combination is different as is the shape.... a good way to show off her baby bump!
TRENDS

COLOR!
Color was everywhere at the Globes this year, with green leading the way! Seen here:
  • Elisabeth Moss in custom-made Donna Karan - a bit over worked, but an A for effort for Donna
  • Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace - Knowing you are the reigning queen of Hollywood and looking the part
  • Carherine Zeta-Jones in Monique Lhuillier Pre Fall 2011 - ummmm, Mrs. Douglas' coming in with her husband as the star of the night.... but this dress looks like it should come with columns and a Max Steiner soundtrack, maybe it just does not photograph well.
  • Mila Kunis in Vera Wang - A beautiful young woman in the HOT movie of the season.... should not be wearing dresses that Queen Helen Mirren would look good in, and you know she did not know so many others would be wearing green.. you are not quite Angie, yet....
STUDIO 54

The return of Calvin Klein! Emma Stone ( don't know who she is ) and Claire Danes both doing what Calvin does best. Simple, CLEAN, chic , Calvin Klein -Nan Kempner would have felt right at home in either of them - but here is the thing, it is not 1977 and minimalism has it's place and that's not on a red carpet, beautiful dresses, but stick the BIG JEWELRY with them.. come on, they are begging you to wear it, rock the six million dollar yellow diamond necklace with either!

Stop the Madness!

Enough, enough of the washed out, colorless blobs on the red carpet, seen it, done it, put it to rest! Especially! if you are blond and fair....not going to list the, cause they all look the same

Looking FANTASTIC at any age!

Jane Fonda in Georges Hobeika Fall 2010
Hailee Steinfeld in Prabal Gurung Spring 2011
  • ex Atlantan Jane Fonda, ageless and Miss Steinfeld, 15, BOTH looking great ! They should teach a class in Hollywood.... both are perfect.

The Flip Side.

Yes, there was all kind of crazy on the runway last night, when you are Helena Bonham Carter ( and Mrs. Tim Burton ) you can wear cracked out Vivienne Westwood and two different shoes, or just plain odd, and the bless- your -hearts ( Gabby..). But, the ones we are picking are the ones that just let us down, COULD have , and SHOULD have done much better.

Our worst :
Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad Spring 2011
  • it is not horrible, but it is just not right. The dress itself is fine, plain, but pretty, but the overlay-cape thing is just odd. J-Lo is a stunning woman, and about to RULE television when American Idol starts this week... really, she should have done more. I added the photo of the model in the dress, just to show it is not ALL bad... just not a major star at the Golden Globes.
Runners up for the worst.
Sandra Bullock in Jenny Packham Spring 2011
  • BANGS! The dress , other than the colorless blob thing, is lovely, but Sandy, Sandy, Sandy.......

Olivia Wilde in Marchesa
From the NYCBFF Harry : " holy frijoles! the Olivia Wilde float is big! " Perfect.

MANY MANY thanks to TLo and the NYT for the photos!

TOM & LORENZO  ( go here, enjoy! )

NEW YORK TIMES : Commentary and slide show
( the NTY picks Jolie, Hathaway and Portman as the best )

Huffington Post : BEST and WORST. ( I don't really agree with them )
