My Dad's memorial service was today. It was fine, did not seem like a lot of my dad was in it, but they say that funerals are for those left behind. I could not even tell you how many people were there, they made all of the family hang out in some little room and then marched us in .It was not as crowded as the night before , when there were just too many people for the space, and ti was HOT. The funeral guy chose the beautiful all white flower arrangement that Dahn and David sent to be on the side of the little podium, it looked lovely.
Many thanks to my pals for coming to Winder and for coming over to the house afterwards. So, so many overly perfumed Winder ladies had been in and out of the house that it was great to have some Moopahs in the house!
I have taken many pics, but am not sure how to download them on this computer , maybe I'll just take laptop to a starbucks or something tomorrow and post some . Three count them three different congealed salads at luncheon today. The bottomless Tupperware box of chicken fingers has been replaced by a bottomless tray of Cuban sandwiches, that Neil and I are munching on as I type. There were lots of people here, the Moopahs segregated themselves to the back screened porch , drank a little , chatted, laughed, I am sure that if three more beers had been drank, dancing would have ensued. Atlanta traffic was on my side for once and kept my pals in Winder a bit longer!
A group of young men gathered in the driveway which was all full of BIG trucks, formed a sort of circle and drank beer and spit ( dipping) in the warm late March sun. I think this was more Southern than the three congealed salads, I hope the pictures come out.
11:47 and the last person just left, really.

Sitting Southern Shiva.
You know, with the mirrors fully functioning... hair is important.
Ok, somehow, I never did this before. I am not kidding when I said I don't do sadness. I have never even been to a Barrow County funeral, but I have caught on pretty quickly. You just sit, and wait , and people come to you, with ham. ( So, it is a little bit of a different Shiva.) Also, there is a vat of chicken tenders that even after all these people have been eating , remains full. Not sure why people think we need quite this many cookies and cupcakes....
People, relatives, that I have not seen in a very VERY long time. People that were children have grown children of their own now. When I left Winder, early, I didn't come back all that much. Drinking started early.. I am holding out. I was told that I was going to partake in "viewing hours" with nothing to view, from six to eight tonight. It is not, so far, sad. More of a celebration of my Dad's life. The two new babies in the house seem to be the focus of things so far......... ..... Ya'll know how much I do enjoy the company of a cherub cheeked toddler........... Function in Disaster, Finish in Style.
The fact that there are so many people here , is making things easier. I am not at all sure about this hanging out in a funeral home thing. Also, you have no idea who is going to show up, its not like people are invited. Is there basketball on tonight? I am taking pictures, but can not download them here on my mothers computer, but will do so asap.
Last night, grandkids plus others, I guess, went through lots of old pictures to put out while hanging out at the funeral home. Lots of babies and smiles, not many beer cans... I would have made different choices. Kyle is giving....
Neil is being very much the trooper, very appreciative of that... he does not see the mine fields that you know, are only in my mind , does not make them any less real at all.
" And so we beat on, boats against the current, born back ceaselessly into the past......"

All you hear is time stands still in travel.
Beat.
Just plain tired and beat up....
We made it to Wider about 1:30 tonight, this morning, what ever. Long trip, lots of rain, but here all safe and sound.
Still in that funk/haze..... for someone that does not do sadness, not even a little bit, this is near impossible. Full function mode, doing the things that I know have to be done. I decided at about hour 8 of being in the car, that I am going to write about the next few days here on the k+b. I very much hope none of you find anything I say callous or insincere, but quite frankly, this is my space and how I am going to work out my feelings of losing my Dad.
Stick with me on this one ... I am going to need the help. To everyone who is putting out good thoughts into the universe, prayer, call it what you will, THANK YOU . To reiterate, I really can not do this on my own.
Lets start with why o why do I have damn pill phobia? those little pink footballs could make calling hours much easier tomorrow. Oh.. there is a WHOLE lot of fried chicken in this house... When the going gets tough.. in Barrow County, the tough get frying....

Read this story, this kid really seems to be thinking clearly, a brave young man.
does this come in Camouflage ?
From Military.com : "The Marine Corps' top officer said March 25 that even if the ban on openly-serving gays in the services is lifted, he would draw the line at forcing heterosexual Marines to bunk with gays on base."We want to continue [two-person rooms], but I would not ask our Marines to live with someone who is homosexual if we can possibly avoid it," Marine Commandant Gen. James Conway told Military.com during an exclusive interview at the Pentagon. "And to me that means we have to build BEQs [bachelor enlisted quarters] and have single rooms." ( the rest )
Yes, General Conway, no gay man has EVER in the history of the Marines, bunked with a gay man. Idiot.
A little VERY REAL issue as DADT repeal creeps slowly along. Partner benefits for gay troops. This scares the poop out of Maggie and her coven of haters. From today's huffpo:
Momentum appears to be building for ending the ban on gays in the military. New rules ordered Thursday by Defense Secretary Robert Gates make it harder to discharge men and women under the policy known as "don't ask, don't tell." His decision is intended as a stopgap measure as Congress weighs whether to go along with President Barack Obama's request to repeal the law. ( more )
What ever do you do when a nice young man serving his country at Camp Dodge in Iowa, meets a nice young local man, and after a respectable amount of time , Marries this nice young man. He is now a LEGAL military spouse.. and that means he gets FEDERAL BENEFITS.. uh-oh, not only is DADT at risk, but the end all of anti gay laws : DOMA.
Happy Friday
What is the flip side of Indian Summer?
Spring is here, the snow and ice are , thankfully all gone, but its cold out today, not even going to get above freezing.
Does not keep Koda out of his swimming hole
But he was not in for long, at all...
Beautiful day, just chilly....
Looks like all the little buds and such in our yard made it through the night though.

The never ending debate:
Mouse 1 or Mouse 2 ?
(Strangely, no one really cared when they switched Monas.)
I was, like most things, late to the party, time having never been my strong suit. So, it's fall of 1994, I am on the ending cusp of new gay and Armistead Maupin's ( my bff since we are facebook pals....). Tales of the City is coming on Georgia's PBS station. I lived in the epicenter of gay life south of New York and East of the city of the tales, and midtown Atlanta was in full Maupinmania. If I remembering correctly, and that is doubtful, it came on Tuesday nights. All of midtown came to a stand still, because we KNEW it was coming. Julia was not a maid , but a nurse with a nice apartment, AND we were going to see boys kiss on broadcast tv! Pink confetti came down like rain. We were here, we were queer, and now for the very first time, we were on TV.
I became mildly obsessed with the books there for a while. We knew things that the folks at 28 Barbary Lane did not. Aids hit Atlanta later than other big cities, and I really was watching people die in front of me. We were , for the most part, all to young to have been a part of the free love pre Aids, party... so it was all a bitter sweet time capsule.
The Greeks and Romans put their heroes in constellations, my people do them one better and TOTC has become a MUSICAL!
From the SF Chronicle "Tales of the City," a new musical adaptation of Armistead Maupin's famed stories - created with veterans of "Avenue Q" and members of the rock band Scissor Sisters - will receive its world premiere in the American Conservatory Theater's 2010-11 season. (read the rest)

Sweet Home
ahhhhh.....
Just as I was settling in on New York being the mother ship of all political crazies, my home state of Georgia comes from behind to try and reclaim the prize.
All the kings horses and all the kings men out in Red State America are manning up to stop the cuumunist take over of our once great country, and a large number of GOP Attorneys General are filing suit against the Federal Government to stop any health care reform , on the basis of states rights. What a fond childhood memory! Gosh, I have not heard the states rights chant, since the Klan used to collect spare change at intersections in Winder, not unlike firefighters or girl scouts! Everyone close your eyes and picture good ole George Wallace in the door way of the University of Alabama.....
Well, it turns out that Georgia elects their Attorney General and OMG, he is a Democrat! ( somebody fetch Miss Pitty's salts...) His name is Thubert Baker, and this is the gist of what he said: I cannot justify a decision to initiate expensive and time-consuming litigation that I believe has no legal merit," Baker wrote in a two-page response to Gov. Perdue. "In short, this litigation is likely to fail and will consume significant amounts of taxpayers' hard-earned money in the process. Oh, yeah, The GOP's there in Atlanta are starting a resolution to IMPEACH Mr. Baker, for you know, not towing the party line doing his job.
Sounds logical, right? HA! Ya'll don't know the boys under Georgia's Gold Dome, and how much those boys from Waycross to NOT want to leave the Cheetah Club and go back to the swamp. [ I need to remember sometime tell ya'll about the double stripper wedding I went to one time, both the bride AND groom were strippers and both wore white, it was fantastic.....] but I am off message. Well, the Obama hating red meaters there in Georgia all went bat shit crazy and started jumping up and down. I mean, two of them split there drinks there at the Cheetah and one dropped the girl giving him his daily lap dance.
Enter the Governor! He huffed and puffed and is going out to find him a " double secret attorney general" to stand up for freedom and justice and the American way. It is good to see the home team taking back a little of the crazy field!

Dinner
kyle + honesty (update)
Thank you all very much for the good wishes, really.
Things are much much better and my dad is out of ICU and in a regular room with windows and tv and all. The absence of darkness was just making him crazy, so this is much better setting. They will be in the hospital for a while longer, but things appear to be looking up.
BIG BIG RETRACTION
Breaking story and news is a little bit of a trickle, so let's hope for the best on this one but; Bleckely County, Georgia, once again, and this just breaks my heart.
I wrote yesterday about Bleckely County high school senior Derrick Martin and his upcoming senior prom. After reading about Constance McMillen in Mississippi going to court to be able to take her girlfriend to her own senior prom, Mr. Martin, approached his school officials to ask if he could bring his own boyfriend. Unlike the Mississippi folks, the South Georgia folks said yes. An out pouring of good wishes and love from across the country, flowers, gifts of tuxes and limos, " you are NOT alone Mr. Martin". Things are rosy, right?
From today's Macon paper : "because of the media attention, Martin’s parents have kicked him out and the teen is staying with a friend, he said. (read the rest )
I guess I was wrong. Just yesterday, I wrote : " Great, good for him, as I have said many many times, I can not wrap my brain around how mentally healthy he must be. And what a damn good job his parents did in raising such a brave , fine young man"
"Martin, an honor student who tutors at-risk elementary and middle school students after school, knew the move would be controversial for the town of about 5,200 residents."
Really , Mom and Dad? Really? Your honor student has the courage to be the boy he has always been, and you sink lower than low and do this? How, Why? I am not even thinking clearly as I write this, how disgusting can parents be? I mean, just look at the young man. If this story is true, and the facts are not all jumbled, Mr. Martin will find that he has a HUGE family out here, of people that can and will love and support him in his life. There is so SO much life outside of that deep South Georgia town, but if he is staying with a friend, if a parent of another kid took him in, I hope he is getting the love and support that he needs there in Cochran. I hope you can know, Derrick, that you have thousands of loving Moms and Dads, Uncles, Aunts, Brothers and Sisters out here.
Weird day for me to be reading and dealing with this. I wrote yesterday that Mr. Martin was the reason that " WE HAVE WON " , but like most victories, it can come with a huge price.
The weather is here.....
T.Lo on a roll-o
Direct steal from the PR BOYS , but cracked me up. Miley and I agree, RPDR is the funniest thing on tv these days.
"Once again, another submission to the Emmy reel. Please hold your applause to the end as we watch a semi-drunk, nervous Puerto Rican drag queen with rudimentary English skills attempt her first satellite interview. Raw and riveting stuff that will be talked about for generations to come."

We have won.
And winning is fun.
( This is not the post that you are expecting, I will get to that.)
Meet DERRICK MARTIN:
Normal looking kid, from the absolute middle of Georgia. Cochran, Bleckley County. You can see on the map, not Atlanta, not liberal Decatur or Athens, this is the old 912 Georgia. And he is a brave brave brave young man.
From the MACON newspaper : "COCHRAN — Derrick Martin worried that he could be responsible for getting this year’s prom at Bleckley County High School canceled.
That’s because the 18-year-old senior is gay, and he plans to take his boyfriend to the year’s most anticipated dance.
That’s something that’s never happened in this small Middle Georgia town. A similar plan by two female students in Mississippi this month prompted school officials there to cancel the prom, making national news.
After asking Bleckley County school officials permission in January to take another boy to the prom, Martin got word last week that his high school will allow it. Bleckley’s prom is April 17 in the high school cafeteria.
“I didn’t expect them to say yes,” he said. “It’s who I am. I have the same rights.
“It’s my senior prom, and I wanted to be able to prove not everyone would cancel prom.”
Martin, an honor student who tutors at-risk elementary and middle school students after school, knew the move would be controversial for the town of about 5,200 residents.
At his high school, prom dates from outside counties must be approved in advance, so Martin went to his principal and asked.
“At first she said no, Cochran wasn’t ready for it,” he said.
Then last week, school officials said they have no policy in place against it.
“You don’t have the right to say no,” principal Michelle Masters said. “As a principal, I don’t judge him. I’m taught not to judge. I have to push my own beliefs to the background.” ( read the rest )
Now, if I was this kid, I would have done it hoping that Ellen would give me 30k, but I am just that shallow. He is a much better person than me. Great , good for him, as I have said many times, I can not wrap my brain around how mentally healthy he must be. And and a damn good job his parents did in raising such a brave, fine young man. But let's just deal with where this is... come on, this is the back water of the universe, NO OFFENSE to those good folks in Bleckely Co. , and trust me, no one from Barrow County throws any stones at anyone. An out HAPPY gay couple at the Bleckley County Prom.
It is events like this, nice normal healthy kids just living their lives that will be the reason that all the haters out there will lose. Like I have said before so easy to hate the other, hate the gays, hate the different... it's really really hard to hate Derrick and his date. Look they are not so scary, they have that same white boy standard bad prom dance step as all the rest of you do. He and the young lady in Mississippi are Maggie G's biggest nightmare, Because they are the future.
God, I hope good southern proms do not end with Freebird anymore.

kyle + honesty
Ok, those that know me well know that I don't do the real emotion thing very well. Sure, I'll puddle up at a random coffee commercial and any Olympic medal ceremony, but the real thing, Not so much. So, this is a little bit , well, A LOT hard for me.
My Dad is not doing so very well. He is in the hospital in Athens and we are , the last time I heard, are not sure exactly what is going on. We are hoping for the best. They are all in Georgia, and I am in Mendon... and sort of in a funk. There just seems to be a fog around everything , so blogging may be a little sparse for a bit.
No really bad news, just no good news. I will keep ya'll posted as best I can.

Respite Over.
Just too much.
A lot was going on, just in the air, everywhere, and I sort of tuned out for a bit. I'M BACK
Seriously beautiful weather here in upstate New York the last few days. Koda had his very first swim of the year, just in and out, still a little bit cold! But we had a very nice walk yesterday. Really helped clear the cob webs.Bright blue skies and shirt sleeves weather, the trail was crowded with everyone out enjoying the first day of Spring. Seems a LOT went on in the couple of days that I was out enjoying the sun.
MY PEN
My pal Dan Choi went a little bit crazy and chained himself to the White House fence this week, after sort of bullrushing the stage as Miss Kathy Griffin was speaking at a HRC sponsored END DADT rally, which was really just a bit of an event for My Life on the D-List. I hope you read about it, if not google. I think it was a very big , and brave deal.
Not everyone agrees.
There is a huge divide with in the gay community, over tactics. All the HRC backed folks, and I am face book pals with several, were all up in arms over his show boating. I am fully in team Choi. There is room with in our movement for Martin and Malcolm.
HEALTH CARE
This could be the best day ever on c-span! Stupakpalooza in the late afternoon. I will write about this later, too.
Don't F**K with me fellows, this ain't my first time at the rodeo

Dinner
Roast Chicken
Green Swiss Chard
Chunky Potatoes
Darn, Kyle, yall eat a lot of roasted chickens. Well, yes we do, but come on. This jumbo chicken cost like 4.50 and it a couple of meals worth of bird, and it is not bad for you in any way. Could not be easier: Wash chicken very well... really. Pat dry with paper towels, season inside, tonight was just a quartered onion, salt, black pepper. Brush with just a little bit of olive oil, salt, pepper and Cajun seasoning.
Beautiful green Swiss chard! I love this vegetable.Caramelize a red onion for a good long time, put it on low and walk away, let it get all sweet and yummy.
add the washed white parts of the chard, and a clove of garlic. A little bit of water. Cook for a bit, five min or so. Add salt and pepper, if I had a lemon , I would have added some lemon juice and zest.
Add the washed green parts, turn up the heat, cook for just a couple of min and then cover and turn off heat for as long as you need to wait. Very , very good!

St. Patty's Dinner
Neil's Dinner
I've got a big old chunk of Irish in me but,
I don't get near this , I'm sure, delicious
dinner. Never have been a fan of the :
Corned Beef
Cabbage
Potatoes ( well, I do like potatoes )
Irish Cheese, I do not know why it was Irish
but it was very good.
Now, you know, that I did not cook the Corned Beef.
Wegman's, Six Dollar Meal. It is a bad photo,
because I am on double secret probation.
Crazy beautiful day today, warm, sunny....
Irish eyes were smiling. What better to show that
than a really, really old grave yard in Pittsford.

Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor.....
TWO VICTORIES!
First
New York City, Queens, Jackson Heights : José R. Peralta defeats Hiram" the slasher" Monserrate. Sounds simple enough, but this is New York, baby... 2+2 stopped equalling 4 a long time ago.
Mr. Monserrate ( henceforth known as " the slasher" ) was the New York State Senator from this very district, the NY 13th. He was ejected from the New York Senate because he was convicted of beating the crap out of his girl friend - on a security camera. Off camera his girlfriend somehow , during the fight fell on a cocktail glass and had to have 40 stitches in her face. But that is really just the tip of the iceberg. You know from previous blogs that Albany is a snake pit, and he is one of the reasons. He switched parties, double switched back and then switched again, from Democrat to Republican and back again. Or something like that, throwing the New York Senate into even more of a mad house .
ALSO, running the the heavily gay Jackson Heights, the slasher was all " I love the homos" .. till it came time to vote, and he was one of a handful of Democrats to vote against marriage equality. Sure, beat and slice up your girlfriend, but the sanctity of marriage MUST be upheld.
The Slasher made GAY MARRIAGE the main issue down in Queens, trying to rally the evangelical Hispanic vote. So this was very much a vote on gay marriage in New York. It looks like a HUGE landslide for the pro marriage Peralta. Good friends of Neils live in this district and were very active in this race. This was a BIG win for our side.
ONE turncoat Democrat down, SEVEN to go....
SECOND
A bill to put same sex marriage on double secret probation down in Pennsylvania failed to make it out of its little Senate committee today, killing it for a while. Sure the theocrats will be back, but for today, its dead in Penn!
THIRD
Superfluous Disco:
Winter exits, stage left
stupid is as stupid does....
Sigh... How do you argue with this? How do you argue with THEY ARE GOING TO KILL YOUR GRANDMOTHER. Facts just do not matter anymore.
J.D. Hayworth was on Rachel last night. He is the Tea Party Candidate running in the GOP primary against John McCain. He went off on the homos a couple of days ago, saying that the court ruling in Massachusetts pretty much said a man could marry his horse. He used a "direct quote". So, on Rachel's show, she pulled up the Mass. court ruling, and the quote that ex Congressman Hayworth is using , is not there, anywhere. After pointing this out, Mr. Hayworth just said just says " well, Rachel ( he used her name, a lot.. one of those guys..) we just have to agree to disagree"
Sigh... no dude.. we don't. What you said is a lie. Facts just do not matter to these people.

COUTURE WOOKIE
Ok, after ALL the hula-baloo over the couture Chanel that SJP wore on the Oscar red carpet... " was it good, was it bad" / " runway versus red carpet", on and on and on. I came to Carrie Sarah Jessica and Carl's defense, as well as the other young actress who wore Chanel on Oscar night.
"It is what it is", if you like Chanel, ( which everyone should! ) you liked it, if not.. well, we would question your taste level! That was then, this is now, and the PR boys have posted :
And yes, an all out Chanel Couture WOOKIE SUIT.
Calm down , Brenda, all the fur is fake, fake, fake.. but even then... Where exactly in Fall of 2010 does the hip young man, wear his WOOKIE SUIT ? Some of the collection is fantastic...
Me and the Wanker.....
Ya'll know the rest. This time it is College Basketball.
HERE is the absolute worst College Basketball Bracket , pretty much in the history of College Basketball Brackets.
A little house keeping.
ONE BILLION DOLLARS.....
With a "B"... Billion. One Billion Dollars.
That is how much money Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid have turned down over and over to get back together for a few little concerts.
ABBA is being inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME tonight. Do not expect to see the four of them on stage in NYC tonight. But many, many queens will be dancing .
Let's just enjoy for a bit:
The Puppets Wife
Yall want scary? Some silly Friday the 13th boogie man coming at you in the dark? Mutant dinosaurs on some island ? How about some real life, that scares the pants off of me, From the L.A. TIMES :
As Virginia Thomas tells it in her soft-spoken, Midwestern cadence, the story of her involvement in the "tea party" movement is the tale of an average citizen in action.
"I am an ordinary citizen from Omaha, Neb., who just may have the chance to preserve liberty along with you and other people like you," she said at a recent panel discussion with tea party leaders in Washington. Thomas went on to count herself among those energized into action by President Obama's "hard-left agenda."
But Thomas is no ordinary activist.
She is the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and she has launched a tea-party-linked group that could test the traditional notions of political impartiality for the court.
In January, Virginia Thomas created Liberty Central Inc., a nonprofit lobbying group whose website will organize activism around a set of conservative "core principles," she said. KEEP READING

In January, Virginia Thomas created Liberty Central Inc., a nonprofit lobbying group whose website will organize activism around a set of conservative "core principles," she said. KEEP READING
The article goes onto say that POST the Supreme Court's recent ruling that jumbo corporate money can now flow into political campaigns, Judy can be rolling in some big coal and big oil and big bank money, to get her little narrow ass point of view out there.

Sunday Night
DINNER
( and this is a big fat lie, I had a frozen Wegman's Pizza,
and a tiny apple pie. I totally stole this from Alexis,
it just makes me look better)
Whole Grain Pasta, with Chic Peas and Excarole
2 cups whole-grain penne
1 head escarole, roughly chopped
4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more to taste
1/4 cup capers, drained and patted dry (optional)
5 cloves garlic, sliced
1/2 cup roughly chopped fresh parsley
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 28-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes, crushed slightly,
liquid reserved
1 15.5-ounce can chickpeas, drained, rinsed and patted dry
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
2 bay leaves
1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese, plus more for garnish
Cook the pasta according to the package directions; add the escarole during the last 2 minutes, cover and do not stir. Remove the escarole with tongs; set aside. Drain the pasta, reserving 1/2 cup cooking liquid. Meanwhile, if you're using capers, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the capers and fry until crisp, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate.
Add the remaining 3 tablespoons oil to the skillet. Cook the garlic, parsley and red pepper flakes until the garlic toasts slightly, 1 minute. Add the tomatoes, chickpeas, a pinch of salt and the bay leaves. Cook until the tomatoes and chickpeas brown, about 6 minutes. Add the escarole and reserved tomato juice and cook until the sauce thickens slightly, about 4 more minutes. Remove and discard the bay leaves.
Add the cooked pasta to the skillet and toss with the sauce; season with salt and pepper. (If the sauce is thick, add some reserved pasta water.) Stir in the cheese and top with fried capers, if using, and more cheese.
This sounds yummy, and I will make it sometime , in the very near future.
